Collections Start Before Payments Become Overdue

If your collections strategy starts when the payment becomes overdue, you've already started too late.

This is something I learned working in real estate collections.

A lot of people think collections begins with an overdue list.

I don't.

By the time a payment is overdue, the problem may have been developing for weeks.

The customer may have forgotten the due date.

They may have a documentation issue.

A transfer may be delayed.

There may be a genuine concern holding the payment.

Or yes — sometimes the customer simply needs pressure.

But you can't manage all five customers the same way.

Good collections is not about sending more reminders or making more calls.

It's about building a system that identifies the problem before it becomes an overdue balance.

For me, that means:

• Clear communication before the due date

• Understanding the reason behind non-payment

• Knowing when to negotiate — and when not to

• Escalating at the right time

• Protecting cash flow without unnecessarily damaging the customer relationship

Because a Collections Manager's job isn't simply to chase money.

It's to make cash flow predictable.

And there's a big difference between the two.
